FAQ
In Person
Is fencing safe?
Yes. All fencing equipment is designed with safety in mind, making fencing a very safe sport. Additionally, safety is our number one priority, and fencers are taught how to properly handle their equipment to prevent injury to themselves and others. However, due to the nature of the sport, getting a bruise now and then is pretty common.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes, students need to be at least 7 years of age.
Do I need my own equipment?
Not at first. Beginners will be issued a jacket, glove, mask, and weapon to be used for their class. Once the student passes their skills test at the end of the session and decides to continue to intermediate, our coaches can assist with ordering equipment.
Can I just order my own equipment online?
It’s difficult to know what to order and what company to order form when you’re first starting out. Working with our club will ensure you’re getting quality equipment at a good price.
What should I wear to class?
A short-sleeved shirt, athletic shoes, and long pants that allow easy movement (leggings are not recommended). Pants and socks should completely cover the legs. Fencing in shorts or with legs otherwise exposed is not permitted.
How do the classes work?
Students new to fencing will start in the beginners class for a two-month session, after which they will take a skills test to ensure they know the basics needed to move up to Intermediate. Once a fencer is ready for the intermediate class, they will choose the weapon they want to fence based on their own interest and schedule.
Students with fencing experience who are new to our club will meet with a coach for an assessment to see which class would be the best fit.
What weapon will I fence?
Beginners at Brushy Creek will start by learning foil but will be introduced to epee and sabre during the session.
Students at the Lakeway location will fence sabre.
Students in the adult beginner class in Pflugerville will learn epee.
Once I have my own equipment, how do I take care of it?
Our coaches have created care guides to help you take care of your equipment.
Do I have to be a USA Fencing Association member?
Yes, at minimum, a non-competitive membership in USA Fencing Association is a requirement for in-person group classes. However, a one-time introductory lesson does not require USA Fencing Membership.
