Coach Murray has been involved with fencing for over 40 years. He started the Round Rock Fencing Club on July 1, 1986. Recently, he sold the club to two of his most trusted and accomplished coaches, Alan Uthoff, and Peter Kaskan. In May 2022, the three of them formed a partnership to relieve Coach Murray of more of the administrative duties. This was so Coach Murray could relax a bit after 36 years of running the club by himself as a sole proprietor. This would allow more time to coach and teach. In late November, Coach Murray made a decision to sell the club completely, and semi-retire. He no longer owns or operates the RRFC, however, he will remain as a specialty coach and consultant. He will continue to operate the Lakeway location, build up the membership, and train the coaches through the holidays of this year. He will conduct his last class as a coach on Friday, December 15th. He published his first children’s book “Freddie The Frustrated Fencer”, which is available in the club store online. He will continue to write and do some volunteer work. Coach Murray is currently working with a group from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to bring fencing to the blind community. He is also working on a Certification Program for coaches to teach the basic fundamentals of fencing to the blind and visually impaired. This is being done through the NCDP with the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association. He is awaiting word on the finalization of being certified as a Maitre d’Armes, or Fencing Master. The highest level a Fencing Coach As he once stated, “I will never fully retire. I will probably just fleche’ off the end of the strip.” The love of fencing will remain in his heart, and he will always be available to anyone who needs him.
