What does a one-on-one lesson consist of?

Each coach will evaluate their fencing student during the first lesson to determine what areas need to be covered. The coach will devise a lesson plan based on these findings and will tell the student what they will cover in the lesson, what to practice in between each lesson and how to prepare for the next lesson. The lessons will consist of footwork drills, target drills, and combinations of the drills and strategy. Coaches may suggest that the fencing student view fencing videos (with parental permission).

What platform is being used?

We are using Zoom to conduct online lessons. A paid Zoom membership is not needed, however the student (or parent, if student is a minor) will need to be able to access Zoom or download the app. ABSOLUTELY NO video or audio recordings of any lessons will be done or allowed.

How much does it cost?

The fee for individual lessons is $15, paid online at registration. If the family is experiencing financial hardships, coupons for free lessons for short term or long term are available with approval of Head Coach. Simply contact Coach Gary Murray . Everything is strictly confidential...

Do I have to be a Round Rock Fencing Club member?

Not if you currently belong to another club. If the student is a minor and is fencing at a different club, they need that club's head coach's permission. New students need to register as a member of the Round Rock Fencing Club as well as USA Fencing Association.

Is a one-on-one lesson suitable for someone with no fencing experience?

No. We prefer to give a free introductory in-person lesson at the club facility. The required equipment will be issued and the coach will give a face-to-face lesson. Please reach out if you have additional questions.

What equipment do I need?

  • A device with a camera and microphone (desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone) that can run Zoom.

  • Glove, weapon, socks and shoes, mask and target.

  • If you do not have equipment please reach out .

  • A journal is highly recommended to record notes about every lesson.

  • For In-Person Group Classes, each fencer needs at least a starter set of equipment.

What should my setup look like?

  • If the fencing student is a minor, a parent or guardian must be in the room at all times.

  • The student will need a clear area of at least 10-12 feet in length and at least 4-6 feet wide that is free of obstacles.

  • The camera or device should be placed 8-10 feet away parallel to the student.

  • For safety purposes, pets and siblings need to be kept out of the training area.

  • In order to start right away and not waste instruction time, the student should have everything in place and be ready when the lesson starts.

Do I have to be a USA Fencing Association member?

Yes, at minimum, a non-competitive membership in USA Fencing Association is a requirement for online lessons.

How long is a lesson?

Each one-on-one is 30 minutes.

Can I request a longer lesson?

Not at this time. However the student may sign up for multiple lessons per week. The only limitation is the dates and times the coach has available. Though it is recommended that a student take no more than one lesson per day.

What if I have questions outside of my lesson time? Can I contact the coach?

Yes, through our contact form. Per SafeSport policy, minor students will not be contacted by their coach, or vice versa, outside of lessons. Communication in that case will need to be between the coach and a parent or legal guardian.

Are lessons done only on weekdays or are weekends available?

Lessons are available Monday through Saturday. This could change in the future, depending upon the availability of the coach.

What if my coach doesn't have availability when I want to schedule a lesson? Can I contact the coach to see if they have available time outside of what is posted on the scheduling page?

Yes. You can contact the coach through the contact form.

How do I sign up?

Go to our Book A Lesson page. The student will select their lesson, coach, date and time.

How do you handle rescheduling or cancellations?

After you book a lesson, you will receive a confirmation email which will contain information and links if you need to cancel or reschedule your lesson.

Will online lessons continue once fencing is able to take place in person again?

Yes! But currently we're planning to use online instruction to supplement in-person instruction now that the club has resumed in-person small group sessions.
